Frequently Asked Questions
about Aligners

Our Trios intra-oral scanner will be used to create a real-time digital 3D model of your teeth without the need for impressions. The small scanner tip will be placed against your teeth to take a series of digital photographs from each angle of the tooth to create a 3D image. This process helps improve your consultation, as seeing a 3D image will allow you to have a thorough understanding of the position of your teeth and allows us to precisely design your smile so will you be able to see how your smile will look after the treatment is complete. This can also be included in a wider treatment plan, for example allowing provision of Cosmetic Dentistry and Dental Implant placement. As no impression material is required it is a lot more comfortable and it avoids the feeling of waiting for material to set to create the impression. We can also stop scanning at any time to allow you to take a break, although this is often unnecessary. Most full mouth scans taking only a few minutes.

The aligners are custom-made, transparent trays that fit directly over your teeth and gradually shift them into the desired position. Their virtual invisibility makes them an attractive option for both teens and adults. The process begins with a digital scan of your teeth, which is used to create a series of aligners tailored to your specific needs. Each set of aligners is worn for about 2 weeks before moving on to the next set, gently and consistently guiding your teeth into alignment. You will typically visit your dentist every 6-8 weeks to monitor your progress and receive new aligners. At Malpas House Dental Practice we can also provide teeth whitening, which many patients choose to do either during or at the end of treatment to enhance the appearance of their new straight smile.

The length of time varies depending on the complexity of your case but most of our patients complete their treatment in approximately 12 months. For the best results, aligners should be worn approximately 22 hours a day. You can remove them for eating, drinking (anything other than water), brushing and flossing. Each aligner is worn for about 2 weeks before switching to the next one in the series.

Clear aligners are designed with comfort in mind, using smooth, high-quality materials that fit directly over your teeth. Unlike traditional braces, these aligners have no metal brackets or wires that can irritate your mouth. Aligners are not painful, but some patients experience slight pressure or discomfort when switching to a new set of aligners. This feeling typically subsides after a few days.

Your Patient Journey

With a team of highly experienced dentists, we use the latest technology to ensure your treatment is both effective and comfortable. Our personalised treatment plans are tailored to meet your unique needs, ensuring the best possible results.

1. Consultation

Our experienced dentist will first assess your teeth to check your suitability for aligner treatment. Then once you’ve decided to go ahead, our dentist will use our Trios intra-oral scanner to capture detailed images of your teeth, ensuring a perfect fit for your aligner trays.

2. Treatment

Your custom aligners will be created from the images taken of your teeth. Your dentist will fit your aligners and give you advice and guidance on wearing them and how long it will be before you are seen to receive your next series of aligners.

3. Aftercare

It’s important you wear your aligners for the recommended 22 hours daily to keep your treatment on track, as well as brush and floss daily to avoid plaque build-up. It’s also a good idea to store your aligners in their case whenever you’re not using them to avoid damage or loss.
